Ukraine in the grip of demographic crisis

1 crore decline in population since 2014

United Nations News: Peace and Security//22 October 2024: (International Screen Desk)::

The United Nations is constantly monitoring the violence of war and its consequences. Seeing these savage results, I am reminded of Mr. Sahir Ludhianvi. Once our famous poet Sahir Ludhianvi had said-

War itself is a problem!

What problems will war solve!

It will give fire and blood today!

It will give hunger and caution tomorrow!

That is why, O noble humans!

It is better if the war is postponed!

In the courtyard of you and all of us!

It is better if the 'shame' keeps burning..!

Despite this, the frenzy of war is looming over the world. A madness continues. No country, no ideology is able to stop it. Some such news is coming out from Ukraine which is much more serious than the visible devastation. Whatever these news have told is extremely serious. The world may come to know about its seriousness very late. By then it will be too late.

In fact, Ukraine has been hit by a demographic crisis. Since 2014, the population has declined by 1 crore. How and what impact it has had on Ukraine and other countries is yet to be known.

Yulia, a young mother was seen in Kiev, who is going to Moldova with her small child. Her picture is also given with this post. You can at least imagine the helplessness and condition of women there.

At present, Ukraine is really facing a very big demographic crisis. The birth rate of children here was already on the decline, but after the invasion of Russian military forces, this situation is becoming even more worrying. The UN Agency for Sexual and Reproductive Health (UNFPA) has given this serious warning in its analysis on Tuesday.

Ukrainian citizens are forced to take refuge in other countries due to war, fertility rate is declining and people are getting killed in the fighting. Demographic trends have worsened, first in the year 2014 and then after the Russian invasion in 2022.

Since the Russian invasion in the year 2014, till now, the Ukrainian population has declined by a total of 10 million, out of which about 80 lakh have been displaced after 2022.

The number of refugees taking refuge in other countries from Ukraine has now reached 67 lakhs. The economy has been deeply affected by the young population leaving the country.

The UN agency has emphasized on adopting strategies to deal with the deepening challenge of demographics, which are focused on promoting human capital and socio-economic reforms.

Florence Bauer, UNFPA's regional director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, said in Geneva that the violence has displaced millions of people, and killed thousands.

According to her, human capital is vital to the country's recovery from the current crisis, but it is in serious decline.

Demographic crisis

The UN agency says that even before the war began, Ukraine was facing widespread demographic challenges. It has a child birth rate of one per woman, which is the lowest in Europe.

In addition to having a lower birth rate than other European countries, its population is aging and a large number of people are moving to other countries in search of opportunities.

In response, Ukraine has developed a national demographic strategy with support from UNFPA, which focuses on human capital rather than just increasing the child birth rate.

The importance of peace

The Ukrainian government believes that solving the demographic crisis requires tackling its socio-economic causes.

This includes making care accessible to people, expanding access to health care and education, and creating new life opportunities for young people and families.

The strategy draws lessons from the experiences of countries such as Sweden, and advocates gender equality and creating a family-friendly environment at the workplace, as well as adopting inclusive social and economic policies.

Regional director Florence Bauer said that the path to solving the demographic crisis will also depend on when peace returns to Ukraine. Nevertheless, the foundation for the country's recovery from this problem can be laid now.

Now it remains to be seen how quickly this crisis can be stopped and in what way? A new history will be created by who all come forward for this noble cause.
